Oz Lotto Jackpot Split
Australia’s very first lottery was held in 1881 by George Adams, a man of many talents, who organised a public sweep on the Sydney Cup. This was the start of the Tattersall’s Sweeps. The official Oz Lotto began in 1994 and the Powerball in 1996. Since their beginning, the Oz Lotto and the Powerball have made many a millionaire, with record breaking jackpots hitting the headlines.
One such record-breaking jackpot was in November 2012 when a total of $100 million was shared between four people from New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. The biggest jackpot won by a single individual was $70 million and was won in January 2016, in southern Queensland. In 2018 the Oz Lotto and Powerball jackpots hit an all-time combined high of $150 million, the biggest pool in the 137 years of Australian lotto history – $70 million for the Oz Lotto and $80 million for the Powerball.
On Tuesday 7th August 2018, the $70 million Oz Lotto jackpot was the highest it had been in 5 years. It was claimed by two lucky ticket holders who each won $35 million.
The first lucky ticket belonged to a private family syndicate of six from north-east Victoria. They had bought their ticket from thelott.com but failed to complete all their contact details. Only when they heard that the Lott was looking for an online winner from Victoria did the winning woman, surrounded by her family, make contact. The family was extremely excited, saying that the win would not only benefit one but actually six families. The winners were eager to share what they would spend their winnings on, with one family saying they definitely wanted a new washing machine, whilst another claimed that a water tank was definitely on the cards. Besides the odd everyday items there was talk of holidays to Europe to visit family and a milestone birthday celebration aboard a cruise ship. The families were all excited and one woman said, “We had already been planning it but our plans have certainly been upgraded now! First class all the way!”
The second lucky winner of the Oz lotto split jackpot prize was a hardworking blue-collar man from Lithgow in New South Wales who had bought his ticket from a local Top End Newsagency. The 50-something year old man had no idea he had won until an official contacted him after the draw. The man, who chose to remain anonymous, was blown away and in utter disbelief claimed, “That’s the best news I’ve had in a long time. Hallelujah!”
He was mostly speechless but said that early retirement was definitely a part of the plan; oh and flying first class of course.
The Oz Lotto and Powerball have made many happy millionaires, changing lives for the better.
The top five most frequently drawn winning numbers for the Oz Lotto are 2, 19, 25, 33, and 40, and the top five most frequently drawn winning numbers for the Powerball are 9, 24, 25, 32, and 34.
Two-thirds of division one wins in the Powerball have been QuickPick entries where numbers are randomly generated.
