New Yorker Wins Powerball Jackpot
Powerball has been making million –and billionaires – for many years. Near the end of 2018, one lucky winner, a Mr Nandlall Mangal won a whopping Powerball jackpot of $245,6 million promising to change his life forever. This is his story.
Nandlall Mangal didn’t play the lottery very often; in fact he only entered if the jackpot was over $100 million. On the 11th August 2018, he was out grocery shopping at the Stop & Shop when he heard that the Powerball jackpot had reached $245, 6 million. Thinking that that would be a nice prize to win, he bought a Quick Pick ticket for just $6. But Mr Mangal, like so many others, never really expected to win the jackpot. He went out of town for a week and left the ticket lying on his kitchen table, only remembering to check it when he got back. Imagine his surprise to find out he was the sole winner of $245,6 million!
Lottery Winner Lies Low
Mr Mangal, originally from Guyana, works as a construction worker in Manhattan in his home city of New York. When he found out he had won, he didn’t tell a soul! He simply went to work the next day and, in fact, continued to go to work for weeks without a word! Nandlall put the winning ticket in a safety deposit box after finding out he’d won. He then called a lawyer to discuss his options going forward.
On 27th September 2018 it was finally announced that the 42-year-old winner had come forward. He took his ticket, with winning numbers 5, 43, 56, 62, 68 and Powerball 24, to New York’s Resorts World Casino. Mr Mangal claimed his prize in the form of a trust, which means he appointed a trustee to manage his winnings on his behalf; a clever move in a state which doesn’t allow winners to remain even remotely anonymous. The Sea & Sand Trust received a one-time lump-sum of $99 321 975 after all the required withholdings. Nandlall Mangal said he only went public because the state law required him to do so and would’ve preferred to stay anonymous. The only states which allow winners to remain anonymous are Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Carolina.
Mr Mangal seems to be very relaxed about his win, saying that he plans to continue working and just see how things pan out. He did however say that, with the help of a financial advisor, he would be paying off some debts, investing, and perhaps buying a new car. His number one splurge is to finally travel, with his first destination being Hawaaii. Nandlall plans on retiring from the lottery saying that it is now time for someone else to win.
Powerball Makes More Millionaires
The Powerball draw on the 11th August 2018 also saw one person in Florida win a prize of $2 million and a prize of $1 million going to another winner in Georgia. Mr Mangal was the first lucky winner of the Powerball jackpot in seven weeks.
