Unlucky Lotto Winners – Part Two
We covered unlucky lotto winners previously, but there are so many interesting stories that we couldn’t resist sharing a few more. Hopefully these tales of misfortune will be a lesson in what not to do, should you ever win!
Tonda Lynn Dickerson
An ordinary Waffle House waitress, Tonda was the lucky winner of $10 million. All her co-workers were just as excited because, according to them, they had all made a pact to split the winnings before each buying a lottery ticket. Tonda said she recalled no such pact being made and was subsequently sued by the other waitresses. They lost but then her boss decided to sue her claiming she had promised him a brand new truck. He took it all the way to the Alabama Supreme Court but also lost. Tonda, wanting to protect her assets, formed a corporation. She went on to give her family a gift of shares via the corporation and was nailed by the IRS for not paying taxes on it. She ended up losing roughly $1 million to the taxman.
David Lee Edward
What happens when you give an ex-con $27 million? We’d hope they’d make a change but apparently not. David, unemployed and living with his parents first claimed the money was a gift from God and that we would only use it wisely. He was visited by a financial advisor but unfortunately, the riches went to his head. He went on a partying binge, using drugs, buying expensive items and eventually marrying a convicted mother of two. In his first three months he managed to blow an impressive $3 million. In a year he’d already gone through about $12 million. Needless to say, he ended up in trouble, living in his rented warehouse and eventually dying alone and penniless at the age of 58.
Evelyn was the luckiest woman alive when she won the lotto twice, just four months apart! The convenience store clerk won a total of $5.4 million and at first proceeded to do wise things like pay off bills and set up a college fund for her daughter. She also bought a car and some gifts for those closest to her. Unfortunately she not only had a gambling and spending problem, but she just couldn’t say no to those asking for handouts. Fast forward and poor Evelyn now lives, penniless, in a trailer. Perhaps not so lucky for having won the lotto twice and still managing to end up broke.
Ronnie Music Jr.
Ronnie hit the jackpot in a scratch-off game and won a nice $3 million. Now when you win the jackpot, it might be wise to invest in order to grow your wealth. However, what you invest in is probably not going to be a crystal meth drug ring. Not being very lucky or smart, Ronnie did just that – he used his winning to buy the drugs then supplied it to others who would resell it at a profit. Investigators said his dealers attempted to sell about 11 pounds of crystal meth with a street value of more than half a million dollars. They also found more than $1 million worth of methamphetamine, firearms, thousands in ammunition and about $600 000. Ronnie was obviously arrested and faced decades in prison. Ronnie, perhaps investing in crime was not so smart.
Winning the lottery brings big responsibility. It’s probably best to listen to your financial advisors and to stay away from crime circles. We promise there are much better ways to handle such a big win!
