Man From Auburn Wins $1 Million
It was a day like any other for Carl Fiesta, a man from Auburn, Alabama. That is until he popped down to the local Express Mart in Fleming. Carl drove to pick up bags of ice for his wife’s birthday celebration and on a whim decided to buy a $5 scratch-card for her too.
Whilst sitting in his car he decided to scratch off the $1000 000 Mayhem ticket as he didn’t believe they would really win anything anyway. Carl soon saw that he had matched two numbers. Number 14 was listed as a possible winning number and it wasn’t until after he scratched to see the prize that he saw the word “JACKPOT”.
Carl had won $1 million!
“I finished scratching off the $1 million and I’m like this ain’t real because I don’t win!” he told Yolanda Vega of the New York Lottery. He apparently checked his ticket ten times and then still drove home to show his wife, Cheryl. She confirmed what her husband saw – the ticket was indeed a jackpot winner.
That night Cheryl and Carl enjoyed the birthday celebrations but didn’t tell anyone about their scratch-card jackpot. They also didn’t rush to claim the prize. Carl said he waited about ten days, opting to talk to an attorney first and then break the news to his four children.
When Carl went to the lottery’s customer service center in Syracuse, the staff there confirmed he had indeed won the jackpot of $1 million. The New York Lottery held a check presentation on a Friday at the same Express Mart where Carl had bought the ticket. He opted for the lump sum and received $537 440 after taxes.
Spending His Winnings
The question we all want the answer to is: What will he and his wife do with the money?
Carl said that he plans to give some of the winnings to each of his children. He said that it felt so good to win the lottery and that he is so happy that he can help his kids out. He also plans to move out of state and buy a house somewhere warm. The couple then also said they would love to plan a trip to Aruba with six of their closest friends.
Carl Festa was the 70th New York Lottery Player to claim a prize of $1 million or more last year. The New York Lottery is by far North America’s largest and most profitable. In total, it contributed $3.37 billion towards education support in New York State in the fiscal year 2017-2018. In fact, the lottery’s contribution accounts for roughly 13% of the total state education aid to local school districts.
