Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous – Francoise Bettencourt Meyers

After writing about some of the wealthiest people in the world we decided to have a look at some of the richest women in the world. Sadly, most on this list are not self-made but hey, who’s going to complain if they inherit billions! The lucky woman on the top of the world’s richest list is Francois Bettencourt Meyers, the L’Oreal heiress.

Francoise (66) is the daughter of Liliane Henriette Charlotte Bettencourt, the French socialite, business woman, and heiress. It was Francoise’s grandfather, Eugene Schueller who founded L’Oreal. Liliane then became a principal shareholder who passed the fortune on to Francoise after her death in 2017. At the time of her death, Liliane’s was the 14th richest person in the world with $44.3 billion.

Inheriting her mother’s fortune shot Francoise to the top of the “richest women in the world” list. It also pushed the reclusive creative into the limelight which she had, unlike her mother, always avoided.

Not Just a Heiress

Francoise is however, not only an heiress but a creative and smart business woman of her own accord:
She is chairwoman of the family holding company and has served on the L’Oreal board since 1997. She is also the president of her family’s philanthropic foundation (Bettencourt Schuller Foundation) which encourages French progress in the science and arts.

Apart from all the family business, Francoise is also a writer best known for her spiritual side. She has written and published literature on Greek Mythology, Jewish-Christian relations, Judaism, Catholicism, the Tribes of Israel and the family tree of Adam and Eve.

She is also an avid piano player.

Francoise has been described as “living inside her own cocoon” by the author of The Bettencourt Affair. He also notes that even as a young girl she seemed uncomfortable in the world of riches and glamour. Unfortunately, after the death of her mother, it became harder to find that kid of seclusion – especially when L’Oreal and the Bettencourt Meyer’s family foundation donated a whopping $226 million to the repair of the Notre Dame cathedral which was destroyed by a fire in April this year.

Words of Wealth

So what does the world’s richest woman do on an average day? Thanks to her love of seclusion, we have no idea! But, we can give you three pieces of wisdom which Francoise has shared about the wealthy life and business:

  1. Value Your Time
Francoise, like many other billionaires, says that time is our greatest resource and one that we cannot get back. “It is imperative to prioritize your life and business in a way that lines up with what you value most.” To execute at the top level, you need to put a price tag on your time.
  2. Don’t Stick With What You Know
Francoise protests against the adage which is well known in entrepreneur circles – “After living that for many years, I’ve come to believe just the opposite.” Keeping an open and curious mind allows for new opportunities that might have ordinarily been outside your scope.
  3. Self-growth is Important
“Most of my lessons came from failures, setbacks, and defeats. Although painful, they developed the self-awareness to grow.”

As of 2019, Francoise is estimated to be worth roughly $49.8 billion.
