Celebrities seem to have an obsession with gold-plated items. Kanye West and reality-star wife, Kim Kardashian spent no less than $750 000 on gold-plated toilets for their estate bought in 2013. At which time, the property was purchased for $11 Million but after some extra additions, the couple advertised it for sale at $20 million.

Donald Trump – $100 Million Private Jet

In 2011, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen sold his private Boeing for $100 Million to Donald Trump who was, at the time, a real estate agent and reality TV star. An undisclosed amount was used to upgrade the private jet. Those upgrades included branding the aircraft with his family’s name as well as countless gold fixtures throughout the plane. In true gold-plated fashion, Trump opted to add gold fixtures to the bathroom sink.

Nicolas Cage – A Dinosaur Skull

It was just another slow day in Hollywood when both Nicolas Cage and Leonardo Di Caprio first laid eyes upon a 67 million year old Tyrannosaurus skull. However, it was Cage who outbid the Titanic heartthrob at the auction by paying $270 000. The skull unfortunately had to be returned to Mongolia after an attorney determined that it was in fact stolen.

Bill Gates – Da Vinci’s Journal (The Codex Leicester)

What could the co-founder of one of the most valuable companies in the world spend his earnings on when he isn’t being a philanthropist? Apparently, one of the most famous of Leonardo da Vinci’s surviving journals. The Codex Leicester became the most expensive book ever sold when Gates paid $31 million for it. He then went ahead and digitally scanned the notebook, making it available on CD-ROM for less than 0.000001% of the original price.

Mike Tyson – $2.2 Million Gold Bath Tub

Mr Mike Tyson was far more extravagant than both Kanye and Trump with his bathroom décor. The boxing champ splashed out $2.2 Million on a 24-carat gold bathtub for his first wife Robin Givens. Despite his success in the ring, the extravagant purchase was just part of a string of overspending that inevitably led to Tyson’s bankruptcy in 2003. He was $23 Million in debt.
